BUILDING COMPASSION
Writen by ms. Nguye Thanh Mai – Head of Administration. Translated by Dang Hai

Studying in Doan Thi Diem Primary School, students have not only been equipped with formal knowledge but also been taught to be kind-hearted since young ages.

The activities regularly organized by the school such as "Raising clay pigs - Nurturing  Children’s Dreams" after the Lunar New Year, “Moon of Love” on the occasion of the Mid-Autumn Festival every year, and donating clothes, stationeries, and books to support the poor students in mountainous areas or remote islands, etc. have gradually kindled in our children love and sympathy for their underprivileged friends all over the country who  do not have enough books and warm clothes to go to school.

Every teacher, staff member and student of the Doan Thi Diem School is really a compassionate heart. Therefore, the school’s charity fund has increased more and more, and our help and sharing have also reached the very remote areas such as: Mu Cang Chai, Son La, Yen Bai, Hoa Binh, Kon Tum, Gia Lai and Dak Lak, or to the remote island of Con Dao, and to Laos - our neighboring country.

Over the past years, the school has joined the program "Nurturing wings to dreams - Crossing lakes and rivers to learn" contributing to the building of bridges over rivers and streams for children to go to school.

With this charity fund, the school has also offered 4 charity houses costing 170 million VND in total to the poor families in Tu Liem district, providing them with a warm shelter during cold winters.

With love and deep sympathy for the unfortunate children suffering from serious illnesses, the staff and students of Doan Thi Diem School visited, offered gifts, and joined Mid-Autumn celebration with the young children who were suffering from cancer and being treated at the Department of Pediatrics in Tam Hiep Cancer hospital. To some extents, these humane activities did relieve the pain of those children.  More specially, with sympathy for the people suffering from heart disease, staff members and teachers of the school have been active in joining the fund-raising campaign "A heart for children". Every year, this activity vibrantly happens on the Mid-Autumn occasion: students organize school-booths selling old toys to collect money for small children whose hearts need to be treated.  Though grade 1 students are very young, they are still very excited to help their parents organize food stalls in the event. This is the very first lesson about compassion for them.

This fund-raising activity was even organized by the parents of Class 5A2 students in the form of friendly football matches with the students of the international schools at My Dinh stadium, and with Hougang Primary School in Singapore. The donation fund increased up to 247 500 000 VND.  Also in the academic year 2011–2012, the school offered 40 million VND to two children in Tu Liem district to pay for their heart surgeries. On the occasion of Mid-Autumn Festival, the school Principal delivered 50 million VND in person to the fund launched by the Vietnam National Television Station.

Charity projects by the teachers and students in Doan Thi Diem School have been implemented for many years up to now.  The school always opens their compassionate arms, joining the community timely in helping the disadvantaged all over the country.
